Basics about Marine Cargo Policies

Basic policies provide coverage for the potential property, casualty and personnel risks related to the insured’s international property and personnel movements. These basic packages can be expanded or supplemented with other policies, to respond to the insured’s increased international business volume, foreign acquisitions, and movements into additional countries that present different risk elements. The insured is responsible for providing periodic reports of shipment values and routes. Reporting frequency depends upon shipper’s volume.

The Michael Ehrenfeld Company offers additional coverage to the basic Marine Cargo Policy. This package generally provides coverage from the time the cargo “passes over the ship’s rail” when loaded onto a vessel or aircraft at the port of embarkation, until the cargo “passes over the ship’s rail” when offloaded at the destination point.

An additional article of coverage, referred to as “warehouse-to-warehouse”, can be included in a Marine Cargo Policy extending coverage to specified land transit. The clause covers the cargo while in “continuous” transit, from the originating warehouse to the ship’s rail, and from the ship’s rail to the destination warehouse. The transit can pass through, and between, various countries as agreed by the insurer.

Another coverage option provided by the Ehrenfeld Company is called “open-policy.” This contains all the terms and conditions of the insurance, except details of the amount and term of each risk to be covered. A Marine Cargo Policy can be written on an “open” basis because details of the amount and term of each future shipment are not known when the policy is written. This avoids policy endorsement for individual shipments and provides for periodic reporting of shipment details. Also, “open policy” is written with no natural expiration date and remain in effect until cancelled.
The Michael Ehrenfeld Company also offers an additional coverage called “All Risk Policy.” This provides coverage for all risks except those specifically excluded within the policy language.
