Ivan, who was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, attended Witwatersand University there. After graduation he entered the insurance industry joining the E.G. Levitan Brokerage firm in Johannesburg as a producer. He later formed Ivan Bertram Insurance Brokerage, which he successfully owned and operated for 16 years. In 1979, Ivan sold Ivan Bertram Insurance to the multi-national insurance brokerage house Sedgewick-Forbes. He remained with Sedgewick for a period of time to oversee the transition; then, in 1980, he and his family immigrated to San Diego.

Ivan became associated with the Michael Ehrenfeld Company in 1980 and has developed a substantial book of business with an international flavor. Many of his clients are located in the United States but have extensive holdings or activities in Europe, Asia and South Africa. In the past 20 years Ivan has developed a very successful clientele following, based on direct personal service and a high level of continuing communication with his clients.
